On Saturday, Feb. 28, the New Richmond High School forensic team made its second straight first place finish in one of its biggest tournaments of the season, where 16 area teams were in action at Baldwin-Woodville High School.

Twenty-nine students participated for the NRHS team, and out of 36 entries, just fewer than half placed in the top five in various categories.

Senior Maria Nelson continued a successful run, taking first in Moments in History, and placing third in Public Address.

Additional first place finishes went to senior Julie Bruner in Demonstration Speaking, and sophomore Angela Tenner in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Senior Hai Nguyen placed second in Oratory, as did fellow senior Aaron Zimmerman in Moments in History. A Group Interpretation trio consisting of juniors Jenna Leahy, Krista Brusewitz and Jackson Scott, also placed second with their title “Bright Shiny Morning.”

Leahy and Brusewitz also placed third in Four Minute Speaking and fourth in Farrago, respectively. Senior Ben Matthys took home third place in Special Occasion Speaking.

Rounding out the award winners were junior Jenna Goodrich with a fourth place finishes in both Solo Acting and Prose; sophomore Patty Nelson with a fourth place finish in Radio Speaking; freshman Bailey Matthys with a fourth place finish in Moments in History; junior Carrie Palmer with a fifth place finish in Public Address; and sophomore Val Bruner with a fifth place finish in Solo Acting.

At the time of press, the team went to action at their subdistrict competition at Ellsworth High School on March 2. The team’s final tournament date will be at Prescott on March 14, and then they move on to Hudson on March 28 for the district competition. Due to some scheduling conflicts, some members of the team will also be in action at an alternate district at New Richmond High School on March 19. Both the subdistrict and district competitions determine who moves on to the state festival at UW-Madison on April 17-18.
