About 12 people walked into the Somerset Village Hall on Monday, March 23.

A pride of Lions walked out.

John Schwab, a Somerset resident, has been involved with the Lions organization for more than 20 years. He said that he felt Somerset could benefit from its own Lions chapter.

“Somerset needs a good Lions club,” Schwab said. “The community is growing and we can do whatever needs to be done, such as building wheelchair ramps for residences, collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids.”

The Lions Club International is one of the largest volunteer service organizations, doing all sorts of projects ranging from cleaning community parks to providing relief for disaster victims.

The initial meeting resulted in 10 charter Somerset Lions members. They got to know each other and brainstormed possible projects. The next meeting will be April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Somerset Library.
