After years of legal wrangling over a deteriorating building along West Fourth Street in New Richmond, city officials have received the news they were hoping for.
A St. Croix County jury on Friday found owner Vernon Borst responsible for paying fines on 34 municipal citations issued by city officials due to alleged violations to nuisance ordinances. Borst must pay about $100 per citation.
Five citations were dismissed by the jury.
In the case of the City of New Richmond versus Vernon Borst at the St. Croix County courthouse in Hudson last week, Borst was answering 40 citations that the city issued in 2007, for his property at 648 W. Fourth St., from which he sells used merchandise.
The city claimed the items stored on the property constitute a nuisance. Borst claimed that he is simply making a living, selling items that he finds at garage sales and auctions.
