Doyle downplays his violation of state ban on Frankenstein veto

It happened last weekend when Doyle vetoed 81 items from the new state budget.

He struck words from three sentences to create a whole new sentence, something voters made illegal last year.

The veto deleted the creation of a study panel to consider care facilities for the mentally ill, leaving the job to an appointee of the governor.

Doyle said the study would proceed as the Legislature wanted and “that will be the end of it.”

He called the violation a “technical, little thing” that his staff did not catch during two busy days of reviewing the budget.

They were scampering to get the budget approved by Wednesday so the state wouldn’t miss out on millions of dollars in federal funds.
