Madison’s Freedom from Religion Foundation says the new Visitor Center at the U.S. Capitol is just fine the way it is.
The group filed a lawsuit yesterday which tries to stop a congressional order to engrave the Pledge of Allegiance and the phrase “In God We Trust” at the new facility.
The House and Senate passed resolutions this month calling on Capitol’s architect to make the engravings in prominent places at the entrance where 3 million tourists go each year.
Critics had complained that Congress spent $621 million on the new three-story underground visitor center with no respect to the country’s religious heritage.
The Freedom from Religion group says the motto and the words “under God” in the pledge were both created during the Cold War as steps to oppose communism.
Now, the group says the $100,000 engraving project would discriminate against Capitol visitors who are not religious and would unfairly encourage a Judeo-Christian viewpoint.
