FFA Safety Day gets national attention

New Richmond’s FFA Safety Day has gained national attention.

The community’s efforts to promote safety were recently featured in the International Community Safety Net July Newsletter.

Community Safety Net is a program that helps to sponsor safety programs in communities in the U.S. and Canada.

“This is exceptional news for New Richmond as a community,” said Rachel Sauvola, agriscience instructor and FFA advisor. “This program wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous support of area businesses who sponsor our safety booklets and let us use various items for demonstrations. Thanks to the principals in all the buildings for allowing it to happen and Steve Wojan for serving as our site host. We look forward to working with our fourth grade teachers and friends for many years to come on this project. Thanks to Hope Nadeau for all her organizing as department head.”

New Richmond’s Safety Day is lead by FFA students at New Richmond High School.

During the course of the day, students visit different stations designed to focus on different areas of safety. This year, the stations featured safety precautions including snowmobiles, tractors, plants, hunting, horses, chemicals and pets.

“Unfortunately, some students aren’t getting this information at home. So we are filling a need that isn’t being met,” Sauvola said in the newsletter. “I am a firm believer in kids teaching kids. Having my high schoolers teach the elementary schoolers is a great way to role model, coach and mentor these youngsters as they build trust and respect.”
