After more than a year of planning, the Somerset post office is officially in its new location.

The post office moved the bulk of its equipment and merchandise from its previous location on Main Street to its brand-new facility in the River Hills Commons area on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Pete Boetcher, Somerset postmaster, said there were still glitches to work out in the new building, such as the front door locks malfunctioning during the morning, but overall the staff is pleased with the facility.

“Much more space,” Boetcher said, gesturing to the back mail room where the carriers wheeled their carts in.

Not everyone was looking forward to the move, however. Many people who used to walk to the Main Street location were sorry to see the change.

“I don’t like it (the new location),” said Goldie Zens, Village of Somerset resident, while waiting in line at the former location on Friday, Sept. 25. “I walk down here from the Treadmill occasionally – I don’t see any need for it to move.”

Boetcher said he feels confident that over time, people would be comfortable with the new 4,100-square-foot facility. The previous building was 1,642 square feet.

“It looks nice,” said Sue Roettger, Somerset resident, after entering the building for the first time Monday, Sept. 28. “So far I like it; it’s much roomier.”
