For the second year in a row, the St. Croix Economic Development Corp. has chosen a Somerset company as one of its three Businesses of the Year.
Scientific Molding Corp. Ltd. was selected as the 2009 Business of the Year in the category of 30 or more employees. Other winners were NCCM Company of River Falls – 2009 Emerging Business of the Year (being in business for five or fewer years), and Baldwin Telecom Inc. of Baldwin – 2009 Small Business of the Year (29 or fewer employees).
“The 2009 winners share many common traits,” said Patti Robertson, president of SCEDC. “They are pioneers and innovators in their respective fields. They are high-tech businesses that adapt to changing markets and conditions. They are bright stars in St. Croix County and Wisconsin.”
SMC was founded in 1988 in a red barn near Houlton as a medical device contract manufacturer. After outgrowing the small barn, they moved to a modern manufacturing facility in Somerset and added a second facility in 1996. It became their global headquarters as they expanded their design, prototyping, material recommendations, molding, subassembly, finishing and packaging for leading medical devices, pharmaceutical and instrument companies across the county and overseas. In addition to Somerset, they also have manufacturing facilities in Amery and Woodville, as well as in Massachusetts, California, Ohio and India.
Mike Schick, chief financial officer of SMC, said he credits the company’s recent growth and increasing global presence with earning the award.
“This is the first time winning and we’re very honored to be nominated, let alone being selected,” Schick said in a phone interview. “We’ve been growing at a rapid pace over the last two years, and we hope to stay the course by continuously looking at other opportunities in the United States and abroad.”
The SCEDC has been recognizing outstanding businesses in the county for 16 years. The group was established in 1993 as a private, nonprofit organization that operates as the independent economic development of St. Croix County. Reflective activities include business retention, expansion, recruitment, new business start-ups and legislative advocacy.
The companies will be honored at an awards banquet on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at the University Center, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Last year, K-Sun Corp. in Somerset won the title of Small Business of the Year.
