The first Middle Border Conference tennis match of the season resulted in a decisive win for the New Richmond boys on Thursday.
The Tigers rolled to a 6-1 win over Ellsworth in their MBC opener on Thursday.
The Tigers swept the singles matches and took two of the three doubles matches. In the Tigers’ six wins, they gave up a total of eight games.
Ellsworth put its two most experienced players at one doubles and the Panthers were able to top Drew Jensen and Charlie Kleiner 6-3, 6-1 in that match.
Tiger coach Mike Montello was pleased with the focus shown by the team in the matches they won.
“I like the fact my players didn’t get sloppy against an opponent of this caliber,” Montello said.
Battle with Menomonie
The Tigers faced Menomonie for the second time in three days in a match on the NRHS courts last Tuesday.
Again the Tigers lost by a 4-3 score, but this match will be remembered for how even the two teams were.
“This is the closest match I think I have been a part of as a coach,” Montello said. “For the most part, my team played very well.”
Five of the seven matches went to three sets and several of those saw the lead change hands in the third set.
The Tigers got two wins on the singles side, from Ben Chilsen and Charlie Gartner. Chilsen struggled through his first set, then made the decision to play more conservatively. His patience paid off as he won the final two sets 6-4, 7-5.
Gartner also had to rein back his play to get a win, pulling out the third set by a 6-4 score.
Cody Chouinard and Buck O’Flanagan got the Tigers’ only doubles win, taking the three doubles match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
One of the best performances came in a three set loss at one doubles, where Jensen and Kleiner put up a strong effort.
“On paper, Menomonie should have won this one more easily than they did,” Montello said. “My guys played as well as I could expect them against a respectable pair.”
Quad meet next
The Tigers will host a quad meet this Saturday against Ashland, Amery and Baldwin-Woodville. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. The Tigers return to conference action next Tuesday, in a home match against Durand.
