Fallen attorney remembered as 'Balsam Lake landmark'An accident during a demolition project killed a well-known Balsam Lake attorney and former judge sometime Sunday evening. A law enforcement official eulogized him as a "landmark" in the community.
An apparent accident during a demolition project claimed the life of a Balsam Lake area attorney.
John E. Schneider, 59, of rural Balsam Lake was found dead at his home on Monday, June 28th.
The Polk County Sheriff’s department said Schneider was attempting to demolish a small outbuilding when a wall collapsed, pinning him under the rubble. It was determined that the accident occurred sometime during the late afternoon or early evening of Sunday, June 27.
Schneider was a long-time judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney. He served as assistant Polk County District Attorney before becoming the DA in 1979. He spent one year as a Polk County circuit judge in 1983. After that, he served as a private lawyer, operating Schneider Law Office in Balsam Lake.
State Assembly Democrat Ann Hraychuck of Balsam Lake said Schneider was highly respected, partially because he always looked for the good in people.
Chief sheriff’s deputy Steve Moe called Schneider a “Balsam Lake landmark.”
