The St. Croix County Fair kicks off in Glenwood City Thursday.
Though it’s been called by several names over the years, what is now known as the St. Croix County Fair in Glenwood City is celebrating its 100th year this July 22-25.
A centennial flag has been created for the fair celebration and will be dedicated on Thursday, July 22, at 10:45 a.m. at the opening ceremonies.
New Richmond and Hudson were both sites of earlier fairs, according to Republican Voice newspapers. New Richmond had a fairground but stopped hosting a fair because they faced too much competition from Glenwood City.
In 1948, the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors officially designated the Glenwood Inter-county Fair as the St. Croix County Fair.
Many special events have been added this year to commemorate the centennial.
The first Fairest of the Fair — then called the Dairy Queen — will be sharing her memories of the fair on Friday night.
There will be demonstrations of crafts such as knitting, crocheting, weaving, spinning and soap making throughout the run of the fair. Cow milking and butter churning will also be demonstrated.
Antique farm equipment, including a wood-framed grain threshing machine, will be on display on Friday, July 23. Antique cars will be shown on Saturday, July 24, though there will not be a competition.
Limited edition souvenir items will be available for purchase, including buttons, yo-yos and ribbons. They will be at the Centennial booth in the commercial building and at other locations around the fairgrounds as well.
This year’s fair schedule includes: Fairest of the Fair coronation on Thursday at 8 p.m.; bluegrass band at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday; magic show at various times on Friday and Saturday; kiddie tractor pull at 1:30 p.m. on Friday; Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. on Friday; local talent show at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday; and carnival rides all weekend.
