Peter Westmoreland and Maggie Hansen were married at the United Methodist Church in New Richmond on Dec. 31.

The ceremony was lovely and succinct. All of the beautiful decorations of the Christmas season made a perfect winter wedding setting.

The Rev. Daryl O. Carlson (Pine Hill Lutheran Church) of Duluth, Minn. conducted the wedding, just as he did here 26 years before for the bride’s parents, Dan and Jane Hansen. The groom’s parents, Ed and Diane Westmoreland, of Afton, Minn., join the Hansens in giving their love and blessings on the new family.

It is worth noting that Maggie is the fourth generation in her family to be married in the Methodist congregation. The families were also warmed by the fact that Pete and Maggie met and courted through their involvement in the church.

Even though there was an ice storm that night, more than 230 guests joined the couple at Gibby’s Lanes banquet facility for the party of the year. Bowling and libations were provided for the guests, most of whom stayed up until midnight to celebrate the New Year with the couple.

Maggie provided party favors that included kazoos, coloring/activity books and color crayons. Centerpieces were fiber-optic lamps which changed color.

The wedding cake was made by a pillar of the community; however, the cake itself had no pillars. Perhaps the most popular amusement was a huge decorated rural mailbox into which guests were encouraged to deposit “marriage advice” (there were some real doozies).

The couple resides in New Richmond.
