Criminal justice club travels to Texas conference, tour of correctional sites

Twelve members of the Criminal Justice Club at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and two instructors recently returned from a five-day trip to the American Correctional Association winter conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Besides the conference, the group visited the Three Rivers federal prison, a medium-security facility, a Texas state jail and the Gulf of Mexico.

Uniquely, their accommodations were in a renovated jail built in 1858. The building is still so authentic that at one point four students were sharing a room, and two left for some snacks. They returned to find they were locked out – but the other two students were locked in. They had to break the door down to free the two students and move them to a “less secure” room.

The ACA conference gives students an opportunity to network at the national level and develop and understanding of corrections at the federal level. They also get to talk with vendors with innovative tools of their trade, such as tasers, security systems and other types of equipment.

The WITC club includes students from the college’s criminal justice-corrections program. The associate’s degree provides the background needed to work in a county jail, state correctional facility, federal correctional facility, youth detention center, treatment facility or halfway house.
