Tiger, Spartan golfers perform well in WIAA sectional tournaments
Seniors Cody Rozales and Dylan Novitzke of New Richmond and Preston Germain of Somerset saw their high school golf careers come to an end in the WIAA sectional tournaments last week.
All three played well in their final high performances. Novitzke played one of the finest rounds of his career at the Division 1 D.C. Everest sectional last week, finishing with a score of 81 to tie for sixth place. Rozales also was in contention through much of the tournament, finishing with an 84, tying for 18th place.
Germain played in the Division 2 sectional tournament in Hayward last Tuesday. He finished the tournament with a score of 90.
Novitzke played so well in the sectional meet that he missed by one stroke playing in a playoff for the final individual qualifier spot at this week’s state tournament. Two of three golfers who finished with rounds of 80 won the playoff to compete at state.
“Dylan struck the ball good all day,” said Tiger coach Jim Saliny. “I was proud of both of them. They really hung in there.”
Novitzke played the front nine in 38 and the back nine in 43. All of the golfers in the tournament played the back nine first.
Rozales was in the thick of contention but three of the longest holes on the Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau tripped him up. Rozales took sevens on holes 9 and 18 and he took a nine on hole 1. Rozales played the front nine in 43 and the back nine in 41.
Germain had an excellent start at the Division 2 tournament, going one over for the first seven holes. He then took a triple bogey on the eighth hole, which ruined his chances for contending.
“Preston’s come a long way since his freshman year,” said Somerset coach Bill Powers. “It was a good end for him.”
