Gartner part of Guard deployment

Gartner, age 23, graduated from New Richmond High School in 2006. He currently attends college at Mankato State University

He joined the Minnesota National Guard in January of 2009

He is part of the B Battery, 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery. His unit is in Fairmont, Minn. He completed his Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma for artillery.

Gartner’s parents are Pam and Greg Gartner. He has three brothers and a girlfriend.

About 2,400 soldiers from the Minnesota Army National Guard are leaving to begin training for a one-year deployment overseas. The soldiers will be supporting Operation New Dawn, which is the drawdown phase of the U.S. military operations in Iraq.

They’ll be stationed in Kuwait, and they’ll be responsible for providing base management and securing the ground convoys of troops, equipment and supplies throughout Iraq.

The troops spent two weeks at Camp Ripley, Minn. for summer training and they are now at Fort McCoy for more training. They’ll go to Kuwait mid-July.

The departure marks the second largest deployment of the Minnesota National Guard since World War II.
