Two matches in and it’s two wins for the New Richmond girls golf team.
The Tigers scored their second Middle Border Conference win of the season last Thursday in a nine-hole match at Pheasant Hills Golf Club outside Hammond.
New Richmond won the match with a score of 170. Osceola was second at 187. Somerset was third at 200, with St. Croix Central ranking fourth among the eight teams at 202.
This match marked the return of defending state champion Casey Danielson to the Osceola lineup. She shot an incredible score of 33, but it wasn’t enough to help the Chieftains catch the Tigers.
The Tigers won on the strength of an exceptionally balanced team effort. All five of the Tiger varsity players shot between 40 and 46.
Junior Leah Bauer put all the pieces of her game together to shoot a 40 for the Tigers. Always a powerful driver, Bauer did outstanding work around the green in this match.
Junior Jordan Peterson solidified her hold on the fifth spot in the Tiger varsity lineup by shooting a 42 at Pheasant Hills. She did not take a score above five on any of her nine holes.
Sophomore Alex Wheeler and junior Rachael Ziller both finished at 44 and senior Hannah Wheeler shot a 46.
Somerset showed significant improvement in bringing its team score down to 200 in this round. Seniors Sammi Wolff and Haylee McMahon led the Spartans by shooting 48 and 49. Sophomore Rachael Briggs was a big surprise, shooting a 50. Senior Carley Seibel ended with a 53 and freshman Stacie Bracht finished at 54.
Central was another team that made a big advancement in this match. The Panthers were led by junior Arinn DiSalvo, who shot a 44 in the match. Senior Kelsey McKenna shot a 50, followed by sophomores Rebecca Isnardi and Katlyn Delander at 53 and 55, respectively. Freshman Kelly Wengelski shot a 62 in her first varsity match.
The busy MBC schedule continues this Thursday when the teams meet at Krooked Kreek Golf Club in Osceola for a match. Somerset’s Bristol Ridge Golf Club will be the site for an MBC match next Tuesday.
