New Richmond’s number one singles player and one doubles team have qualified for this Wednesday’s WIAA Division 1 tennis sectional tournament in Stevens Point.

They qualified during the Eau Claire Memorial Division 1 Subsectional Meet, played on Monday.

Senior Amy Kukacka and sophomore Mattie Kidder advance as the Tigers’ number one doubles team. Junior Kaycie Anderson advances as the Tigers’ top singles player.

Anderson went into the subsectional meet seeded third among the one singles players. She drew Natalie Berger of Superior as an opening opponent. Anderson wasted no time in getting her win, beating Berger 6-0, 6-1.

Kukacka and Kidder were the fifth seed in the one doubles flight at the subsectional meet. They knocked off the fourth seed from Chippewa Falls to advance to Wednesday’s sectional meet. The Tiger duo defeated Rachel McDonald and Jessie Zwiefelhofer 6-3, 6-4.

The Tiger one doubles team has a tough assignment at the sectional level. They draw the top team from the Wausau East subsectional, Olivia Heitz and Elizabeth Smith of Merrill. The Merrill tandem was their top two singles players until being shifted to doubles recently. Since moving to doubles, they are 8-0.

The rest of the Tigers saw their seasons come to an end on Monday at the subsectional meet. The Tigers did record two other wins in the subsectional meet.

Junior Heather Halvorsen was seeded fifth at four singles. She defeated the fourth seed, Heather Mollan of Menomonie, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round. Halvorsen then faced the top seed, Kelsey Hines of Hudson, and was defeated 6-0, 6-0.

New Richmond’s three doubles team of Carley Brotzler and Allie Wrich also won their opening match. They were the fourth seed in their flight. They defeated the fifth seeded team from Chippewa Falls in the opening round, 6-4, 6-4. Brotzler and Wrich then faced the top seed from Eau Claire Memorial and were defeated 6-1, 6-0.
