New Richmond golfers tie school record, qualify for Division 1 sectional meet

The performance by the New Richmond girls golf team at the 2011 WIAA Rice Lake Division 1 regional meet was an impressive display of handling pressure.
The Tigers are hoping they can continue to perform at that level at this Wednesday’s WIAA sectional meet and next week’s WIAA state meet.
In the regional meet at Rice Lake, the Tigers tied a school record by finishing with a 346 team score. They finished second in the regional, behind the 341 score posted by River Falls.
Tiger coach Neal Ziller said he felt that River Falls and New Richmond were the two favorites to earn the state tournament berths that can be captured at the sectional meet. The sectional meet will be played at the Forest Hills Golf Club in La Crosse.
“All five girls are playing well,” Coach Ziller said. “The girls are driving exceptionally well.”
The Tigers had three of the top five scores in the regional meet. Sophomore Alex Wheeler and junior Leah Bauer tied for second place in the regional by shooting an 83. Senior Hannah Wheeler tied for fifth with an 85.
All five of the Tigers placed among the top 13 girls in the 40-player field. Juniors Rachael Ziller shot a 95 and Jordan Peterson shot a 99.
The 346 score is impressive considering the difficulty of the course the girls were playing on Wednesday. Turtleback Golf and Country Club in Rice Lake is considered a difficult course, similar in design to the New Richmond Golf Club.
The Tigers played smart, precise golf to post the 346. They shot a 174 on the front nine and a 172 on the back nine. Coach Ziller said all five girls played well, but said Bauer has elevated her play to rank among the best players in this part of the state.
“Leah’s really ripping it up. She’s gotten better in every week of the season,” he said.
If the Tigers qualify for state, they would compete in the state meet on Oct. 10-11 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
