NRFD extinguishes smoking cellar

The New Richmond Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at 115 S. Knowles Ave. on Dec. 30.

The New Richmond Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at 115 S. Knowles Ave. on Dec. 30.

When crews arrived on scene, an area behind 109 S. Knowles Ave. was smoldering.

Fire Chief Jim VanderWyst said it’s too early to tell the cause; however, the building’s tenants do smoke in the area.

“That’s all speculation at this point,” he said.

Crews did enter the basement of the building to verify there was no fire inside. The incident is under investigation.
