Never heard of pickleball?
It is a fun, fast-paced game for all ages that has gained rapid popularity across the nation.
A demonstration of how to play pickleball was held last Thursday in the New Richmond Community Commons gymnasium.
Marc and Beth Lybeck led the pickleball demonstration. It was a hands-on demonstration, which showed how quickly and easily the basics of the game can be learned.
Lybeck said he hadn’t heard of pickleball until a year ago. He said business clients who wintered down south told him about the new game. Lybeck ordered a portable net and rackets and his family has fallen in love with the game.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing games in the country, especially among senior citizens. You don’t have to be in great physical condition to play the game, because it is played on a court about half the size of a tennis court.
“All ages can play,” Lybeck said. “It’s a lot of fun, very fast paced.”
The game is played with a solid racket made out of wood or graphite. You hit a ball that is similar to a wiffle ball. The game can be played indoors or outdoors. Lybeck said there are many examples of the game on youtube.com for people who are interested in the game.
New Richmond Community Education Director Cheryl Emerson said that, beginning on Feb. 1, there will be an open gym time from 6-8 p.m. each Wednesday for people interested in learning pickleball. She said as interest picks up from there, a decision will be made on whether to offer pickleball leagues through Community Ed.
