The New Richmond High School dance team had remarkable success on Saturday, sweeping the championships at the Western Regional Varsity Dance Championships at Eau Claire North High School.
The championships in the Pom and Kick categories qualify the Tigers for state in both events. The state championships will be held this Saturday at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse.
“It was a perfect day for our team. We could not have asked for better performances or results,” said Tiger coach Ali Saliny. “Our team had flawless performances, peaking at just the right time.”
In the Pom category, the NRHS dance team was up against numerous top teams, including Onalaska, which finished in second place.
“In years past Onalaska has come out on top, but we knew what it would take to be Regional Champs this year,” Saliny said. “To hear them announce our name for first place was really an exciting and proud moment for us. It was awesome to have so many fans there supporting the girls.” In the Kick category, the NRHS dance team came out on top by a huge margin.
“Kick is our specialty. The judges always comment that our team is so advanced with their skill and technique,” Saliny said.
The success in the regional competition is just one step in the Tigers’ overall goals for the season, according to Saliny.
“Taking home first place in both categories is a great accomplishment, but our goal from day one has been to place high at the state level. This team has great momentum, talent and determination, all of which will serve them well this weekend as they compete for a state title.”
