St. Croix Central eighth-grader Ariel Backes is accustomed to being in the finals of the district spelling bee. The 2011-12 competition, which includes students in grades four through eight, was her fifth year in a row appearing in the finals. This year she earned the champion title.

Backes beat last year’s champ, eighth-grader Aaron Bossen, by correctly spelling the word accustomed.
