Ten local wrestlers will be in action when the second day of the WIAA state wrestling championships at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

New Richmond has two wrestlers who will be competing on Friday, while Somerset and St. Croix Central will each have four wrestlers in action.

New Richmond’s Shane Blackman and Abe Anderson will be competing in the wrestlebacks on Friday after losing their opening Division 1 matches on Thursday.

Blackman was defeated 10-7 by Justin Parker of Milwaukee Bradley Tech in the 113-pound opening round. Blackman will battle Steven Cygan of Green Bay Preble in Friday’s opening round.

Anderson was defeated by Nate Hennes of Hartford Union, 8-1 on Thursday. In Friday’s action, Anderson will take on Stoughton freshman Joe Nelson in the 132-pound wrestlebacks.

Somerset

All three Somerset wrestlers in action Thursday were winners in their opening round match. Junior Bobby LeRoy opened the 120-pound bracket with a 9-6 win over Brock Polhamus of Sparta. In the quarterfinals LeRoy has a tough assignment, facing Campbellsport’s Ryan Costello, who has a 38-1 record. LeRoy is currently 37-6.

Somerset’s Gabe Flandrick earned his 41st win of the season with a 6-1 win over Dodgeville’s Jasper Meeker in the 138-pound bracket yesterday. In today’s quarterfinals, Flandrick will tangle with Valders junior Stetson McCulley. Flandrick defeated McCulley in last year’s state tournament.

Somerset senior Austin Bushinger earned the 100th win of his career with his 3-2 win over Nolan Wagner in the 152-pound Division 2 bracket yesterday. Today Bushinger will meet defending state champion Lucas Lambrecht of Sheboygan Falls in the quarterfinals.

Somerset senior Haydon Dvorak had an opening round bye in the 182-pound Division 2 bracket because of his sectional championship. His opening match will be against Waupun junior Brady Huenink, who carries a 40-5 record. Dvorak’s record stands at 39-3.

St. Croix Central

Central senior Adam Lewis won his first match in state tournament competition, taking a 2-0 decision from Austin Schwarz of Delavan-Darien. Lewis has a big assignment in the 106-pound quarterfinals, drawing undefeated Zach Sirny of Wild Rose-Wautoma.

Central junior Cody Nyhagen was a sectional champion, giving him an opening round bye in the Division 2 160-pound state bracket. Nyhagen’s opponent in the 160-pound quarterfinals will be Jackson Fox of Wrightstown.

The only local wrestler to be eliminated from the state competition on Thursday was Central junior Kyle Aaby. Aaby was defeated in the 182-pound class with his 7-1 loss to Jordan Pardowsky of Luxemburg-Casco in Thursday’s opening round.

Undefeated Central senior Marcus Malecek had an opening round bye in the Division 2 220-pound state bracket following his championship in the Osceola sectional meet. Malecek’s opening pairing at state is against Adams-Friendship senior Tyler Burrows.

Central senior Lauden Wood ended Thursday’s action with one of the most dramatic wins of the day. Wood trailed George White Wing 5-3 late in the third period of their 285-pound match. Wood made a bold dive to get at White Wing’s legs, getting a takedown in the final 10 seconds. As the final buzzer sounded, Wood was awarded with two back points, giving him the 7-5 win.

Wood’s next state opponent is undefeated Garett Cary of Big Foot-Williams Bay in the 285-pound quarterfinals.
