The uplifting New Richmond girls basketball season came to a rocky end on Tuesday. The Tigers were upended in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 regional playoffs, losing in overtime to Menomonie 48-45.

New Richmond had a double-digit lead twice in the game, but the Tiger offense stalled late in the game. Menomonie outscored the Tigers 10-3 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

St. Croix Central’s girls also saw their season come to an end on Tuesday. The Panthers lost at Amery in Division 3 play, 46-29.

Somerset was the lone area winner in Tuesday’s round of regionals. The Spartans couldn’t have asked for an easier assignment. They faced Cumberland, which hasn’t won in two years. Somerset played reserves for much of the game and they still rolled to a 67-18 win.

Somerset will now advance to the regional semifinals on Friday. The Spartans, the fifth seed in the Division 3 bracket, will play at Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, the fourth seed. The winner of Friday’s game will qualify for Saturday’s regional championship game.
