Local youth wrestlers shine at state meet

Youth wrestlers from all three local school districts were placewinners at the 2012 Kids Folkstyle State Wrestling Tourney on Saturday in Madison.

Youth wrestlers from all three local school districts were placewinners at the 2012 Kids Folkstyle State Wrestling Tourney on Saturday in Madison.

New Richmond sent seven wrestlers to the state meet and three ended up as placewinners, including a state champion.

Bryce Younger is New Richmond’s state champion. He took first place in the seventh grade 105-pound weight class.

New Richmond also had two second place finishers. Alex Schmidt earned second place in the seventh grade 140-pound weight class. Jake LaVenture earned the second place trophy in the fifth grade 100-pound class.

The Somerset youth wrestlers matched the performance of their varsity team in state competition, by getting all four of their state entrants on the awards stand.

Somerset had two second place finishers at state. Abby Bushinger was the first Somerset girl ever to qualify for state and she took second place in her bracket. Hunter Neubarth was also a second place finisher in his division. Nick Bushinger was a fourth place finisher and Logan Peterson took sixth place in his class.

St. Croix Central had two wrestlers compete at the state meet. Drew Malecek and Trent Smith both had 1-2 records at the state tournament.
