Eight-year-old Brett Iverson of Hammond was recognized at the Village of Hammond Board meeting Monday, April 9, for his donation of an American flag to the Hammond Cemetery.

Shortly after his beloved neighbor Vince Tubman passed away on Feb. 26, Iverson noticed the American flag in the Hammond Cemetery was tattered and torn.

Iverson told his mother, Gretchen, that he wanted to donate a new flag to the cemetery before Tubman’s March 2 funeral.

“I saw the old flag was torn like a windsock. I wanted a nice, new one up for his funeral,” he said.

Gretchen reminded Brett that he’d won a flag at a church raffle several years ago, which was donated by American Legion Post #432 member Charlie Grant.

Brett said he wanted to donate the flag in his neighbor’s honor because Tubman was a good friend of the family.

The day before the funeral, the Iverson family replaced the tattered flag with the new one.
