Five New Richmond hockey players were part of the Section 1 team that dominated the opposition in the 2012 Wisconsin Senior Class Tournament held March 24-25 in Waupun.
Forwards Max Skatrud, Parker Olson and Nate Jones, defenseman Kyle Montgomery and goaltender Jacob Hilby represented New Richmond on the Section 1 team in the tournament that showcases Wisconsin’s premier senior boys hockey players.
Section 1 bludgeoned its opposition in all three games in the tournament, with the New Richmond players filling key roles for the team. The three New Richmond forwards skated together for most of the tournament.
In the opening round, Section 1 built steadily to an 8-3 win over Section 7. Olson scored the only goal of the first period, off an assist from Jones. Jones scored in the second period, off assists from Olson and Skatrud. Skatrud helped Section 1 pull away in the third period, scoring with assists from Jones and Olson.
Hilby and WSFLG’s Thomas Labatt split the goaltending time evenly in each game. Hilby stopped 12 of the 14 shots he faced.
In its second game of the opening day, Section 1 rolled past Section 3, 10-5. Skatrud started the scoring, with Labatt getting the assist. New Richmond’s players broke the game open in the third period, with Skatrud, Montgomery and Jones all scoring during that period. Hilby finished with 14 saves in the game.
Section 1 saved its best for the championship game. Facing Section 8, Section 1 pounced early and never backed off in posting a 14-5 win. The nine-goal differential is the largest winning margin in a Senior Class tournament championship game. The tournament has been held since 1982.
The New Richmond players again played a major role in the win. Jones scored the opening goal of the game, giving New Richmond players the distinction of scoring the first goal in all three Section 1 games. Skatrud and Olson assisted on that goal. The Section 1 team, nicknamed “The Northern Ducks,” scored five more goals in the first period. Skatrud scored two of those goals, with Olson and Jones assisting on both.
Hilby stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced in the championship game.
The Senior Class Tournament is a chance for players to audition for Team Wisconsin, which plays in the Minnesota NIT national showcase tournament on April 14-17. The New Richmond players decided not to try out for Team Wisconsin, because none of them will be playing hockey at the next level. They jointly decided to end their hockey careers on top.
