Two western Wisconsin men have been charged with felonies related to the alleged theft of snowmobiles and trailers from the Town of Erin Prairie.

Jeffrey W. Lehto, 44, Menomonie, and Chris G. Garness, 47, Chippewa Falls, were charged with the theft of movable property valued at between $5,000 and $10,000. The pair allegedly stole three snowmobiles and two trailers, valued at about $6,100, from a St. Croix County property on Feb. 23.

Lehto made an initial court appearance April 26 and faces a hearing May 8. Garness is scheduled for an initial appearance May 24. The charges have a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a possible $10,000 fine.

Law enforcement officials were helped in the case after they found a receipt at the scene. The receipt was eventually traced to Garness.

Garness allegedly told officers that he and Lehto had taken the snowmobiles and trailers and drove them to a property near New Auburn. The owner of that property said that the two indicated the snowmobiles and trailers were stolen.
