Wisconsin State Farmers Union members Charlotte Croes of Deer Park, James Streveler of Brule, Darin Von Ruden of Westby and Kara Slaughter of Madison joined 100 family farmers, ranchers and fishermen from across the country in Washington, D.C. April 16-18 for the National Farmers Union Spring Legislative Fly-In.

“Meeting with our representatives in Congress allowed us to put a face to the issues currently affecting rural Americans, particularly the upcoming farm bill which was the focus of this fly-in,” said NFU President Roger Johnson. “Meeting face-to-face with the policymakers and voicing our concerns and possible solutions is one of the most important ways we can make a difference for all U.S. farmers.”

Farmers Union members urged members of Congress to pass a farm bill in 2012. Specifically, members encouraged Congress to support a Market-Driven Inventory System, funding for the energy title, a livestock title that protects Country-of-Origin-Labeling, and a strong safety net that protects family farmers.

“As Congress is considering the 2012 Farm Bill, it is critical that our message advocating for a strong safety net and MDIS is heard,” said Johnson. “It is only every few years that we can influence this most important piece of legislation. The work our members did over the last few days really does make an impact on the future of farm programs.”

National Farmers Union has been working since 1902 to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities through advocating grassroots-driven policy positions adopted by its membership.
