May 12 marks an important milestone for the National Association of Letter Carrier’s “Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive.” It is the group’s 20th anniversary for the national drive to help provide basic necessities for millions of Americans.

Each year, the second Saturday in May is a day when all citizens have an opportunity, with the help of their letter carriers, to easily donate food to needy families in their community. Locally, letter carriers collect donations for the Five Loaves Food Shelf and Clothing Center in New Richmond.

Nationally, last year, letter carriers collected 70.2 million pounds of food. In Western Wisconsin, letter carriers delivered thousands of pounds of mail and food in the pouring rain.

Remember, food pantries can only accept unopened, unexpired items. They also cannot accept “homemade” canned foods. If donated, these items will be discarded by the food pantries.

Most pantries need peanut butter and jelly, canned tuna in water, whole wheat pasta, canned soups and stews, canned fruit packed in juice, 100 percent fruit juice and whole grain cereals.

Most needed non-food items are toilet tissue, paper towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bath soap and diapers.

For needed items at Five Loaves Food & Clothing Center, call 715-243-7491.
