A sure sign that summer is near is the start of the New Richmond Millers adult baseball season.

The Millers begin their 2012 schedule this Saturday with a home game against the Brill Millers. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Citizens Field.

The Millers begin their St. Croix Valley League schedule the following afternoon. The Millers will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Spring Valley Hawks, a team that reenters the SCVL this season.

The SCVL has a new look this season, with the league divided into three divisions. The Millers will be part of the Red Cedar Division, along with Osceola, St. Croix Falls and Menomonie. SCVL teams play two games against the teams in their division and one game against teams in the other two divisions. The divisions are all named after rivers, with the other divisions named the Eau Galle Division and the St. Croix Division.

The Millers’ roster has a similar look to last season, sprinkled with a few newcomers. Ryan Telschow, Jon Will and Dan Leavens return at first, second and third base. Mitch Paquin and Josh Leavens will vie for time at shortstop, with Cody Joiner and Josh Baillargeon as the reserve infielders. Matt Peterson and Grant Nelson will share time at catcher.

Outfield options for the team include Peterson, Jordan Maxon, Eric Schmitz, Peter Roby and Zach Warren.

There are a number of pitching options. Sean Conrad will be the number one starter to begin the season. Josh Leavens and Hayden Zimmerman will also fill important roles on the pitching staff. Joiner, Will, Coleman Roskam and team manager Ryan Stephens will all chip in as part of the pitching staff.

The Millers schedule can be found on the team website (www.nrmillersbaseball.com). There are 27 games on this season’s schedule. Among the highlights are nine home games during the month of June, including four on Father’s Day weekend. Osceola will again be the opponent for the Millers’ annual Fun Fest game in July.
