The St. Croix Central School District Wellness Committee is hoping the community will participate in a 5K fun run/walk on May 16 to support the Nelson family.
On March 17 Glen and Julie Nelson were struck by an oncoming vehicle while riding their motorcycle. Julie did not survive the accident. Glen is at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. and has a long recovery ahead of him. They are the parents of St. Croix Central students Trevor and Collin Nelson.
The SCC Wellness Committee was established about nine years ago.
“We promote wellness for our staff,” said committee member and elementary physical education teacher Brenda Simone.
The committee conducts various activities and challenges and provides resources to promote healthy and safe lifestyle habits among all St. Croix Central School District employees.
On average 20-40 district staff members participate in the committee’s activities.
“It’s about promoting health and wellness and supporting families in our community,” Simone said. “A lot of people have asked, ‘how can we help the Nelson family?’ We thought this is one small thing that we can do to rally around the family.”
She said this is the first time the committee has organized a community-wide run or walk.
“The Nelson family is an amazing family and we thought this would be a great opportunity to continue with our mission to promote health and wellness to our employees and also to support this family,” Simone said.
Simone said she hopes a lot of students, community members and school employees participate in the run/walk.
The committee would like the Nelson Fun Run to be an annual event.
Part of the proceeds from the event will go toward the Nelson Family Education Fund for Trevor and Collin and part of the proceeds will go toward the A.L.I.V.E (Aid to Local Individuals Via Education) organization, which helps local families in need.
In addition to being active and helping a family in need, participants will receive a rubber wristband following the race that says Nelson Family Fun Run and A.L.I.V.E., Simone said.
