The New Richmond boys golf team couldn’t find a way to stop the Osceola boys from overtaking them for the Middle Border Conference championship.
Osceola won the 2012 MBC golf tournament, played on the Chieftains’ home course at Krooked Kreek Golf Course in Osceola, by nine strokes over the Tigers. That victory gave the Chieftains the MBC overall championship with 73 points, leaving the Tigers in second place with 72 points.
The Tigers shot 332 at the conference tournament, but that couldn’t match the 323 shot by the Chieftains on their home turf. Osceola senior Charlie Danielson was the tournament medalist, shooting 69. He also finished the season as the top player in the conference. New Richmond senior Kyle Montgomery ranked third in the conference scoring, earning him first team all-conference honors.
Danielson’s 69 was 10 strokes better than any Tiger in the tournament. Leading the Tigers was freshman Kole Hallmark with a 79. The points Hallmark earned in the tournament helped him to earn second team all-conference status. He started the tournament with a birdie and kept his composure through the round.
“He’s going to be a good little player. He already is,” said Tiger coach Jim Saliny.
Connor McCann shot 82 for the Tigers, followed by Ben Norman at 84, Tanner Wisemiller at 87 and Montgomery at 90.
The Somerset boys finished third in the tournament, locking them into third place in the final standings. Matt Skoglund led Somerset by shooting 84 in the tournament. Zach Bahr and Danny Green shot 85, Jake Green shot 86 and Hunter Iverson shot 96.
Jake Green is Somerset’s lone all-conference golfer. He finished second in the conference points total behind Danielson, the defending WIAA Division 2 state champion.
“That is really where he belongs,” Somerset coach Bill Powers said of Green’s second place finish. “He is the second best player in the conference and that is where he finished.”
