Bear climbs New Richmond tree; eventually leaves

A year-old black bear wandered into New Richmond on Monday morning, June 11, and spent most of the day stuck in a residential tree.

A year-old black bear wandered into New Richmond on Monday morning, June 11, and spent most of the day stuck in a residential tree.

The bear was spotted lumbering near Mary Park by several residents at about 7:30 a.m. He ended up on 1st Street, where he was frightened enough to climb a tree just a block away from the Civic Center.

The bear appeared to want to leave the tree at times, but eventually climbed higher.

According to New Richmond Police, the bear had left the tree and the area by about 8:30 p.m. Monday night. The bear's whereabouts or direction of travel was unknown.

A police officer at the scene estimated the bear was a year old and weighed about 150 pounds.

Officials warn that bears are dangerous animals and should not be approached for photos or close viewing.
