LETTER: Online scam targets home renters

To the Editor:
I have been a victim of a Nigeria scam using Craigslist advertising homes for rent in the Stillwater area.
These guys are good. They have more than one listing, so far I have discovered three. I am not the only victim. I met another victim tonight.
They have you fill out a “rent” application and ask a bunch of odd questions. They tell you you are accepted to rent their home and provide information on the next steps. It explains how you are to get the documents on the house and the keys.
The rent is $700 per month and they want you to wire your security deposit through Western Union to secure the home and in return they will FedEx the documents and keys. They are using real addresses in Stillwater and the actual owner’s name.
I want to let the public know about this scam. I met a couple tonight that went through the same scam. I have all the emails, recorded voicemails, address where to send the money and the other ads listed on Craigslist that are part of this scam. The public needs to beware and these people need to be stopped ASAP.
