New Richmond’s Summer Stretch Program has shattered another record by registering 941 students in the pre-kindergarten through seventh grade classes offered this summer.

Lisa Vergin, curriculum and instruction administrative assistant, said the number of students who registered is roughly 200 students higher than the previous year.

To keep up with the demand, additional classes were offered to the students. Those classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.

According to Vergin, at least four classes had filled within hours of allowing registrations.

“Registration begins at midnight and by 6 a.m. at least four classes were full,” she said.

Some of the most popular classes include digital photography, American Girl dolls, the various cooking classes, fishing classes and football classes.

The classes are divided up throughout the district, with four sections held at Hillside Elementary, four sections at Starr Elementary and the remaining classes at New Richmond Middle School.

Students can chose from a number of topics ranging from physical activity classes, like 1-2-3 dance and around the world with football, to those centered around the core curriculum, like math mania and academy of reading.

Students are able to choose their own classes; however, parents were encouraged to talk with previous teachers for classes that might be more beneficial to the students, such as reading classes or math classes.

Classes are offered from June 11-29 and are free to those registered in the New Richmond School District.
