New Richmond Hockey Association donates to Vietnam Vets

The New Richmond Hockey Association recently made an $1,800 donation to Chapter 331, the St. Croix Valley chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The New Richmond Hockey Association recently made an $1,800 donation to Chapter 331, the St. Croix Valley chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The donation is from proceeds from the 20th Annual Ross Kittel POW/MIA Prisoner Of War/ Missing In Action) Memorial Bantam A/AA-B Tournament held in New Richmond on Jan. 20-22.

The money is to be used for various causes throughout the St. Croix Valley, in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The largest of these are two $1,500 scholarships, awarded to two seniors from area high schools.

The Vietnam Veterans groups are known as chapters rather than posts as in VFWs and American Legions.

The one representing our area is Chapter 331 out of River Falls. The chapter was created in 1987 by a number of weary, but caring Vietnam Veterans who knew others that needed the companionship of their fellow veterans from a very controversial conflict.

They have become one of the most active and largest chapters in America. They have co-sponsored this tournament for 20 years and hope to carry on the tradition for many more. They thank the New Richmond Youth Hockey Association for the privilege to be part of their activities.

Here is where the chapter makes donations through the year:

January:  Scholarship  $2,000

February: Hunger Prevention Council  $600

July:     Highground Bike Tour  $500

July:     Persian Gulf Tribute - Highground  $300

September St Croix Sheriff K-9 Unit  $500

October:   El Paso Community Club - Fireworks  $200

December:  Christmas-gifts for the needy  $600

December:  Hudson Hot Air Affair  $395
