Tigers roll in winning 2012 New Richmond Golf Invitational
The realm of possibilities for the New Richmond girls golf team is wide open.
The realm of possibilities for the New Richmond girls golf team is wide open.
The Tigers proved that by overwhelming a 15-team field in their home invitational last Wednesday, including all schools that will be competing in the Division 1 regional tournament in New Richmond later this season.
This was no ordinary showing by the Tigers. The Tigers finished at 354, the best score the team has ever produced on its challenging home course. The Tigers were the only team in the tournament to have all five players finish the 18-hole tournament with scores under 100.
What pleased New Richmond coach Neal Ziller most about the tournament was that none of his players was satisfied with their scores. He said all five Tigers said they had problems getting out of the sand and several were frustrated that their level of play slipped on the back nine.
Junior Alex Wheeler led the Tigers with an 82. She finished second in the medalist race to defending WIAA state champion Casey Danielson of Osceola, who shot a 71, including a 34 on the back nine. New Richmond’s Leah Bauer tied Rice Lake’s Stephanie Baribeau for third with 85s. Tiger senior Jordan Peterson finished with an 89. Rachel Ziller shot 98 and Megan Chelberg shot 99.
This tournament served two purposes. It brought all the Division 1 teams in to see the regional tournament course and it gave the Middle Border Conference squads the same opportunity. Somerset ranked fourth among the MBC teams in the tournament, shooting a 452. St. Croix Central was sixth among the eight MBC teams.
Somerset was led by sophomore Stacy Bracht, who shot a 104. Senior Arinn DiSalvo paced the Panthers with a 98.
The MBC golf schedule continues this Thursday with a match at Osceola. The MBC teams will compete at Somerset next Tuesday.
