Deputy assaulted during domestic dispute call (GFH)

LARIMORE, N.D. - A Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Deputy was assaulted in Larimore on Tuesday evening while responding to a domestic dispute call.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded about 9 p.m. to a verbal domestic dispute that had turned physical. An ambulance also was dispatched to the scene. When a deputy entered the residence with the ambulance crew, they found Daniel Svir, 22, of Larimore, who had apparently fallen down the stairs and was injured.

The deputy was helping to assess any injuries to Svir, when Svir then attempted to leave the residence.

According to the sheriff’s department, Svir punched the deputy in the face and they both went to the ground. Svir then tried to strangle the deputy, before the deputy was able to get free and eventually subdue Svir, according to the sheriff’s department. Svir was arrested for assault on a police officer.

Man dies in motorcycle accident (DP)

MANDAN, N.D. -- A 32-year-old man died and a 37-year-old woman was injured in a motorcycle accident south of Mandan Tuesday evening.

The man was driving a Harley Davidson on Highway 1086, 16 miles south of Mandan at about 7:20 p.m., when he failed to negotiate a curve. The driver and his passenger were ejected, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The driver died at the scene and the female was taken to the hospital.

The crash is under investigation and the names of those involved have not been released.

Fatality reported at Williston work site (DP)

BISMARCK -- The Bismarck Area Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating a work-related fatality in the Williston area, Eric Brooks, assistant director for the Bismarck Area office said this morning.

A limited report came in Wednesday regarding the construction-related fatality, he said.

OSHA is in the initial stages of the investigation and will have more information Thursday, he added.

Bail for accused killer set at $1.5 million (GFH)

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. -- The Crookston man accused of killing a Thief River Falls woman had his bail set at $1.5 million in his first court appearance Wednesday morning.

Jedidiah Dean Troxel faces a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of Tanya Kazmierczak, who was found dead in rural Pennington County on Sunday. Authorities arrested Troxel on Monday and charged him Tuesday. Troxel’s next appearance is Oct. 29, when he will be able to enter plea of guilty or not guilty, said County Attorney Alan Rogalla.

During the investigation, Troxel admitted he and Kazmierczak had been at a party together but said he left after Kazmierczak. He also told investigators that he “was not at the Smiley Bridge” before investigators had told him that’s where Kazmierczak’s body had been found, partially nude and with her throat cut.

Investigators also found boot prints at the spot along the Red Lake River where Kazmierczak’s body was found. The prints match those of a pair found at Troxel’s residence, according the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department.

Arrest made after motorcycle chase (FF)

MOORHEAD, Minn. – A 29-year-old Moorhead man is in the Clay County Jail after allegedly leading police on a motorcycle chase that reached speeds of up to 70 mph Tuesday night.

According to a news release from the Moorhead Police Department, a sergeant tried to stop the motorcycle for a minor traffic violation about 10:42 p.m. The motorcyclist fled out of city limits, and the officer slowed down as he lost sight of it. Other officers saw the motorcycle coming back into Moorhead and tried to stop it but again lost sight of it. They later found the bike abandoned.

An off-duty detective who had heard the description of the suspect found a person matching the description.

Patrick Wayne Sandland allegedly admitted to the detective that he was the person police were looking for.

Sandland was arrested on suspicion of felony fleeing a police officer and gross misdemeanor DUI. The motorcycle also is subject to forfeiture because it was used to flee police, the news release stated.
