Somerset soccer gets treasured win over Osceola

There’s very little that goes over better in Somerset than a win against Osceola.
The Somerset boys soccer team was able to enjoy that feeling by winning at Osceola on Monday, 5-1.
The Spartans led 2-1 at halftime, before taking charge of the game in the second half. Junior Jon Bucklew scored both of the Spartans’ first half goals, with J.T. Karis assisting on both scores.
In the second half the Spartans struck quickly. Sophomore Logan Wiederin scored 1:27 into the second half. Wiederin used his speed to notch another goal at the 6:09 point of the second half. The final goal of the game came from Somerset’s Josh Lee at the 55:41 mark.
The win raises Somerset’s record in the Middle Border Conference to 5-2-1. The Spartans currently are in fourth place in the conference standings, trailing Amery, New Richmond and Barron.
The Spartans faced two opponents at opposite ends of the difficulty spectrum last week. They played an upper level non-conference opponent at Forest Lake, Minn., last Tuesday. Two days later, the Spartans played at Spooner, where the Rails occupy the basement in the Middle Border Conference standings.
At Forest Lake, the Spartans were up to the challenge, putting up a gritty effort in a 5-2 loss. Forest Lake struck first, getting the opening goal in the 17th minute. Somerset tied the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute and that score stood through halftime.
That Spartan goal was the product of quick ball movement. Rhys Linke got the ball at midfield and quickly jabbed a pass to J.T. Karis. Karis put the ball ahead to Jon Bucklew, who took the ball on the run and scored from 20 yards out.
Somerset further shocked Forest Lake by scoring 10 minutes into the second period. Bucklew got the ball at midfield and forwarded to Gavin Meader. Meader did a nice job of settling the ball, dodged an onrushing defender and fired a shot from 25 yards out that tucked in the upper corner of the far post.
Forest Lake got the final four goals, but coach Bill Roll said the Spartans had given a showing of which they could be proud.
“Forest Lake’s got 2,300 kids. It’s a good game to build from. It gave them confidence they can stay with most teams,” Roll said.
When the Spartans played at Spooner, the outcome was never in doubt. Spooner is a young, inexperienced team that is learning the game. The Spartans scored twice in the first 10 minutes and led 7-1 at halftime. The Spartans played reserves nearly the entire second half of the 8-1 victory.
Meader and Bucklew each scored three goals in the first half, with Logan Wiederin also logging one goal. The second half goal was the product of work between freshmen Beau Harris and Ethan Lammers, with Harris getting the goal.
