LETTER: Nursing home vote is welcome news

To the Editor:

Thanks to Fred Horne, the chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee of the county board, for his dedicated leadership.

Also thanks to Daryl Standafer, the president of the county board. Daryl conducted a smooth, fair, professional meeting. Certainly with emotions running high on both sides of the nursing home issue that meeting could have taken on a much uglier nature. It was Mr. Standafer’s leadership which prevented that.

I am very pleased with the outcome of that meeting. Continuing nursing home services by St. Croix County is the wish of our citizens, according to the results of voting in two referenda.

There is bound to be some ugly language thrown back and forth. Please, let the majority of us not be drawn into the mud of moral hyperbole and righteous indignation.

The county nursing home is a service which we can all be proud of providing with a small amount of our tax dollars. We, the citizens of St. Croix County, are not in any sort of business. We do not have a profit motive. I am proud that we will continue to be in service to our fellow citizens.
