St. Croix Central’s Arinn DiSalvo shot the best 18-hole score of her career and the Somerset girls golf team posted its best score of the season at the WIAA Division 2 Sectional Golf Tournament at the Hayward Golf Club last Tuesday.
DiSalvo nearly played her way into the WIAA state tournament. She missed qualifying for state by four strokes. Somerset finished seventh among the eight teams entered in the sectional meet.
DiSalvo shot a career-best round of 86 at the challenging Hayward course to place eighth among the 47 players competing in the sectional tournament. DiSalvo plans to continue her golf career next fall at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Central coach Dave Larson said DiSalvo was crushing her drives during the sectional meet. DiSalvo avoided trouble all day, never taking more than a six on any hole. Larson said the pin placements for the sectional were in difficult locations, making it tough for the golfers to make challenging putts, without putting themselves in precarious spots if they missed. Larson said DiSalvo made excellent decisions all day on how to approach her putts.
“She kept it under control very well,” Larson said of DiSalvo’s sectional round. “She was pleased and she should be.”
The Somerset girls also came out of the sectional tournament with a positive feeling. Their score of 404 was their best of the season and all five girls put together strong rounds to finish the season.
Sophomore Stacy Bracht led the Spartans, as she’s done all season. She finished with a 97 at Hayward. Junior Meghan Wolner shot the best round of her career by shooting 100. Senior Cassie Peterson put together her best round by shooting 102. Senior Sam Swanson finished at 105 and junior Rachel Briggs at 108.
Somerset coach Bill Powers said the coaches were able to concentrate on helping the varsity players in the week before regionals and it paid dividends. They worked with Bracht on putting and chipping and Wolner with her swing. Wolner used assistant coach Lea Jondal’s clubs for the sectional meet, which also helped her results.
Powers said the Spartans could be an even better team next year with Bracht, Wolner and Briggs returning and several younger players who look ready to compete for places in the varsity lineup.
The Spartans have also distributed their team awards for the season. Bracht was named the Most Valuable Spartan and Swanson received the Spartan Award.
