Children from St. Croix Central Elementary School who participated in the Scholastic Read for the World Record program gathered on the playground for a photo Friday, Oct. 12. The Scholastic Read for the World Record program was an internet-based interactive reading challenge for kids. The goal was to create a new record for most minutes spent reading this past summer. Kids joined their school’s team online, chose their own books to read, and logged their reading minutes online. SCC elementary school teacher Shirley Arneson said the goal was for each school to read 100,000 minutes, collectively. She said SCC elementary read 423,168 minutes from May 1 to Aug. 31, putting SCC in 46th place out of around 989 schools. 609 students participated in the program.
