LETTER: Swanson concerned about environment

To the Editor:

If you are truly concerned about Wisconsin’s environment, and in particular the degradation of lakes such as Tainter and Menomin, then you have an easy choice on Nov 6.

Jim Swanson, the Democrat candidate for the 29th Assembly seat, is a life-long champion of the environment, whereas his Republican opponent, John Murtha, has consistently voted in ways that threaten the environment and public health.

Swanson has a remarkable record of service and dedication to Wisconsin’s natural resources. He is an avid and ethical outdoorsman; he loves to hunt and fish; he teaches his “at risk” charter school students about nature and takes them on camping trips; he writes a highly informative and entertaining outdoors column for the Dunn County News; he was the president of the Wisconsin’s Muzzleloaders Association, and he received the 2011 Outdoor Educator of the Year award from the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.

There are very few people with stronger resumes when it comes to protecting Wisconsin’s wonderful wilderness and wildlife.

On the other hand, incumbent John Murtha (R) has one of the very worst voting records in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters only gave him a favorability rating of 9 percent. He voted against protecting sensitive wetlands, against renewable energy, against restrictions on phosphorous which is killing our lakes, against curbs on carbon monoxide and hazardous air emission, etc. Check it out for yourself at www.conservationvoters.org

In my opinion, Representative Murtha has caused considerable harm to the world we and our children live in. Please join me in voting for Jim Swanson on Nov. 6.
