St. Croix County’s unemployment rate drops

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development announced the preliminary September 2012 unemployment rates for Wisconsin’s 72 counties on October 24.
St. Croix County’s rate was estimated at 4.5 percent, compared to the August rate of 5.1 percent and July’s rate of 5.4 percent. One year ago, the county’s unemployment rate was estimated at 4.7 percent.
DWD said all 72 counties had rate declines between August and September, and all but two had declines compared to September 2011.
Only three counties had lower unemployment rates than St. Croix in September. Pierce had the lowest rate in the state at 4.3 percent (down from August’s rate of 5.1 percent and July’s rate of 5.3 percent),
Menominee (13.7 percent) had September’s highest unemployment rate in the state.
St. Croix, Pierce, Polk, and Dunn counties comprise Wisconsin’s Greater St. Croix Valley. In addition to the September rates for St. Croix and Pierce, Dunn County’s rate was 4.9 percent (down from the August rate of 6.4 percent). Polk County’s rate in September was 6.7 percent, compared to the August rate of 7.6 percent.
The 13-county Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington MN-WI metro area reported an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent in September, down from August’s rate of 5.7 percent. One year ago, the unemployment rate in the Twin Cities was 5.9 percent.
