St. Croix Central’s football team gave Somerset a battle, for a half, in the WIAA Division 4 state quarterfinals in Somerset on Saturday.
In the second half, Somerset outscored the Panthers 28-0, pulling away for a 49-14 victory.
Somerset advances to the Division 4 state semifinals, where the Spartans will face Black River Falls. BRF advanced with a 22-19 win over Nekoosa on Friday night. The WIAA will announce the date and location of this game later this weekend, but it will be either Friday or Saturday, at either UW-Stout in Menomonie or Carson Park in Eau Claire.
Somerset again was led by the dazzling running of quarterback Tyler Ledbeter in the win over St. Croix Central. Ledbeter rushed for 333 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s victory. His touchdowns covered 70, 12, 45 and 74 yards.
Spartan senior fullback Vern Breault scored the team’s other three touchdowns.
Somerset held a 21-14 lead at halftime as Central gave a hearty battle in the first half. The Panthers got two touchdown passes in the first half. The first came when senior receiver Cody Nyhagen outbattled three Somerset defenders to grab a deflected pass out of the air for a 22-yard score. The second came on a 42-yard connection from quarterback Carl Moll to Jason Matteson.
