Somerset earns return trip to state championship gameThe Spartans overpowered undefeated Black River Falls in the WIAA Division 4 state semifinal game at Carson Park in Eau Claire, 33-8.
The goal all season for the Somerset football team has been to return to Camp Randall.
On Friday night, the Spartans completed that part of their goal. The Spartans overpowered undefeated Black River Falls in the WIAA Division 4 state semifinal game at Carson Park in Eau Claire, 33-8.
The second half of the goal is to win the state championship that so narrowly eluded the Spartans last year. The Spartans will face Big Foot in the WIAA Division 4 state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison at 7 p.m. this Thursday. Somerset was defeated by Wrightstown 28-26 in double overtime last year in the Division 4 state title game.
Somerset played with its usual efficiency on both sides of the ball in dominating Black River Falls. Somerset scored on each of its offensive possessions. Meanwhile, the vaunted BRF offense was completely shut down by the Spartans. BRF speedster Jordan Millis was limited to two big plays, a 25-yard catch in the first half and a 30-yard run on the first play of the second half. Otherwise, the Spartan defense limited his involvement in the BRF offense.
Somerset’s running game ground out 380 yards, with fullback Vern Breault and quarterback Tyler Ledbeter both eclipsing 100 yards. Somerset’s offensive line proved quicker than the Tigers’ and Breault and Ledbeter had open holes all night.
Somerset scored the opening touchdown with 31 seconds left in the first quarter on an 11-yard run by halfback Gabe Flandrick, capping an 86-yard drive.
Somerset scored twice in the second quarter. The first came on a 20-yard run from Ledbeter. The second was on a 1-yard blast from Breault.
Ledbeter passed for a touchdown in the third quarter, finding tight end Gaelin Elmore for a 17-yard strike. Somerset’s score in the fourth quarter came on a 16-yard run by Bobby LeRoy.
BRF scored its touchdown with 2:27 left in the game.
