Local businessman loses cancer battle

Bernie Kopp, a long-time businessman in the New Richmond area, died Friday, Nov. 9, after losing a battle with cancer.

Originally from Plummer, Minn., Kopp made his way to New Richmond in the 1972. He worked at Doboy Packaging Machinery and later was general manager of New Richmond Industries.

Kopp was involved with the New Richmond Area Chamber of Commerce during that time and served as the organization’s president in 1983. During his work with the chamber, Kopp was among those who worked on economic development efforts to try and attract new businesses to town.

Kopp also ran for the mayor position in New Richmond in the early 1980s but failed to get elected. He also served on a task force that led to New Richmond’s eventual hiring of a city administrator to lead the community.

Kopp later managed a business in Amery, before venturing into the real estate business. He and his son, Steve, also ran a printing business for about five years.

In 1998, Kopp and his son started New Horizon Homes, Inc. in New Richmond, constructing new houses during the region’s boom years.

Kopp’s son, Steve, said his father was a “man of integrity and honesty” who will be missed by all who knew him.

“I’ve got a big hole in me right now,” Steve said as he tried to comment about his father’s life.

Steve explained that his father was humble and meek.

“I called him old school,” Steve said. “There aren’t too many old school people anymore.”

Daughter-in-law Megan Kopp agreed.

“He was easy to respect,” she said. “His handshake was his word and he made everyone feel welcome. And he never had anything bad to say about anybody.”

Visitation is planned for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Cullen Crea Funeral Home in New Richmond, and one hour prior to funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in New Richmond.
