Early rising worker leads to arrest

DULUTH -- A restaurant cleaner whose alarm clock went off an hour early caught two alleged burglars in the act Wednesday morning at the Clyde Iron Works restaurant.

Brett Allen Delvalley, 28, of Moorhead, Minn., and Jesse D. Hanninen, 26, of Duluth were arraigned Friday in State District Court in Duluth on charges of aiding and abetting second- and third-degree burglary and possession of a police radio during the commission of a crime. Delvalley is also charged with being in possession of burglary tools.

The restaurant cleaner reported for work early, about 5:30 a.m., and heard the sound of change being rattled inside the cash drawers in the businesses’ office, according to police. He immediately called 911 and saw two suspects run from the building. Three police officers responded and nabbed Delvalley and Hanninen on foot near the restaurant.

According to court records, Delvalley has a prior conviction for burglary. He was also convicted in North Dakota for manufacturing methamphetamine. Hanninen has prior convictions for burglary, felony theft and receiving stolen property.

Delvalley was being held in the St. Louis County Jail on $25,000 bail and Hanninen on $20,000 bail.

Man who fled police rescued from river

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Police say a Colorado man who fled a traffic stop in Moorhead early Friday ended up crashing his car in downtown Fargo and fleeing on foot onto the partially frozen Red River.

The man broke through the ice, and officers used floating rescue ropes to pull him from the icy river after several minutes, Moorhead Sgt. Rob Matheson said.

Jerrid Scott Maes, 26, of La Junta, Colo., was arrested on suspicion of fleeing, possession of a controlled substance and multiple traffic offenses. He was taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center to be treated for exposure-related symptoms before being booked into the Clay County Jail.

Maes allegedly refused to stop for a Moorhead patrol officer who tried to pull him over at 2:46 a.m. A pursuit in the downtown area lasted several minutes and reached speeds of 40 to 50 mph, Matheson said.

After crossing the river into Fargo, Maes crashed his car and ran from the crash scene and onto the partially frozen river.

Public input sought on Drayton Dam project

ST. PAUL – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District has proposed a fish passage project at Drayton Dam in North Dakota as a mitigation feature for the proposed Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan flood risk management project.

State and federal agencies working together on the project believe that Drayton Dam may be adversely affecting aquatic life in the Red River by blocking the ability of fish to migrate upstream. To address this, the Corps has a tentative plan to construct new rock rapids 300 feet upstream of the existing dam and remove the existing dam.

Three from high school die in same week

WEST FARGO, N.D. – The nearly 1,500 students at West Fargo High School are in mourning after the deaths of three classmates in just three days.

Sophomore Tessa Miller died Wednesday. Her family was keeping her on life support in preparation for organ donation.

Friday news reached students of two more deaths – 18-year-old senior Levi Schulz and 16-year-old junior Ian Alves, who both died Friday morning. Alves passed away about 8:45 a.m. after an 18-month battle with two aggressive forms of cancer, while Schulz died of injuries he suffered in a vehicle accident at 7:40 a.m.

Assistant West Fargo Police Chief Mike Reitan said witnesses reported Schulz, a resident of Horace, N.D., appeared to be walking across Sheyenne Street near the 23rd Avenue South intersection to his disabled car when he was struck by a southbound pickup. The car had a flat tire, he said.

The pickup’s driver, 35-year-old Travis Egerdahl of Fargo, wasn’t injured or cited, Reitan said.

ND Wheat Commission to hold annual meeting

FARGO – The North Dakota Wheat Commission county representative’s annual meeting will be Tuesday and Wednesday at the Fargo Holiday Inn and North Dakota State University.

Wheat research investments and marketing opportunities will be highlighted during the meeting.

County representatives will tour NDSU’S quality testing research labs, a state-of-the-art greenhouse and the new commodity trading room at Barry Hall.

Other highlights will include discussion about market promotion programs and export opportunities in South Asia. Keynote speaker at Tuesday’s banquet will be Matt Weimar, regional vice president of U.S. Wheat Associates, China/Hong Kong, who will talk about life and business in China.
