The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign has tipped the scales at $113,093.28 as of Jan. 3.
Duana Bremer, executive director of the Salvation Army of St. Croix County, said she couldn’t be happier with this year’s results.
“The St. Croix County Red Kettle Campaign was a success once again because of the support of the generous public,” Bremer said.
The Salvation Army set a $110,000 goal for 2012 and that goal had been met as of Christmas; however, Bremer said the campaign continued to help fund the ever growing need in the community.
“A special thanks to all those that helped by donating time ringing or money to the kettles, along with all the retailers in St. Croix County that graciously helped in the fund raising endeavor: Hudson: Wal-Mart, Fleet Farm, Family Fresh, County Market, Papa Murphy’s and Walgreens, New Richmond: Family Fresh and Walmart, Baldwin: Nilssen’s Super Valu, Roberts: Roberts Grocery Store,” she said. “Without the combined support of all of these businesses and people it would not be possible for Salvation Army to help those in need throughout the year.”
The money collected through the Red Kettle Campaign is used locally to fund many of the Salvation Army’s programs, Bremer said.
The Salvation Army supports programs including emergency assistance for rent, utilities, transportation, dental services and medication. In addition, funds are used to provide milk coupons to all food pantries in the county. Milk coupons provide a gallon of milk to individuals and families who seek assistance at the pantries.
The funds raised during the campaign will also be used for the Happy Kids Backpack program, a program that helps to ensure local students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program will have enough food to eat while they’re not in school, and Grace Place, a shelter in Somerset, Bremer said.
Currently, the Salvation Army packs 140 backpacks for students every week.
At Grace Place, 154 individuals were provided shelter last year. The emergency shelter can house 24 individuals or eight families at any given time.
